My memories of life in the 50s are very similar to those already recorded. After secondary school I decided to attend Scott’s Secretarial College, then in Russell Street, because I could not face nursing and did not have the aptitude for teaching. About halfway through the course I was offered my first job as an assistant to the bursar at Tintern CEGGS on the recommendation of one of the teachers. The school had relocated from Hawthorn to rural grounds in East Ringwood. I was there for six years, saving my award wage for my first trip overseas. This was accomplished in 1960 in the company of a girl-friend whom I met at the’ Pilgrim Theatre’ in East Melbourne. We both attended classes in speech and drama conducted by Maie Hoban. I went on to enjoy performing in amateur theatre and also studied with Miss Hoban for the Trinity College of Music, London (Speech). In those days examiners came from London. This brings me to a memorable night in Melbourne on 3rd February 1959 when I attended a charity performance of ‘My Fair Lady’ at Her Majesty’s Theatre. It was an exciting night as the patrons were anxious to see the film stars who were in Melbourne filming ‘On the Beach’. Yes we had great seats in the dress circle and saw Stanley Kramer, Gregory Peck and his wife Veronique, Fred Astaire, Donna Anderson, Tony Perkins and Ava Gardner who stole the show. Their presence, and the delightful production of My Fair Lady, was indeed a Melbourne night to remember.
